SALON: THE FEMALE BODY AS AN AUTONOMOUS ZONE

Performance artist and painter Poppy Jackson will discuss the presentation of the female body as an ‘autonomous zone‘ through live performance.

Performance artist and painter Poppy Jackson will discuss the presentation of the female body as an ‘autonomous zone‘ through live performance. Poppy will present recent research into actionist performance and the activist body, with particular focus on her consideration of the menstruating body as inherently performic.

Through her SPILL Showcase performance this October, the artist will undertake the challenge of presenting an embodied and self-authenticated female sexuality within a context where the ubiquitous sexualisation of this body is often coupled with its devaluation. In the lead up to her SPILL performance, the Salon forms an opportunity for the artist to gain feedback on her current ideas for the work, and for attendees to input into her creative process, for which she is being mentored by artist Heather Cassils.
